SurfMuff

The SurfMuff is a neoprene headband with a narrow chinstrap to stop it getting washed away. The ear protection area is sculpted to a slight cup to enclose the ears. There are velcro fasteners at the back and on the right side for the chin strap.

Surf conditions
3 foot Praa Sands light crosshore wind, air temp 10 deg C, sea temp 15 deg C.

Comfort
Although not very cold I noticed the SurfMuff kept my ears very warm and protected from the wind. However with each duck dive they flushed and water got into my ears. There was also an insulation effect across the forehead.

Hearing
This is reduced especially when they have filled with water, but can be drained easily enough by momentarily lifting the ear flap. My impression was that they affected the hearing much the same as Proplugs do, but again this can easily be overcome by lifting the ear flap.

Balance
Slightly affected, but less than a full cap. This didn't seem to be a major problem.

Retention
After a couple of times emerging from the water with a blindfold across my eyes I learnt to lay the front of the strap higher on my forehead to stop it slipping down. The waves were not really strong enough to trouble the SurfMuff.

Conclusion
Reasonably comfortable, and probably good protection from surfer's ear, especially in cold air. I would definitely be looking to wear these later in the autumn when sea and winds get a lot colder, but before resorting to a full hat.

Postscript
My rating of this product fell a bit when I found I preferred my ProPlugs and I had given up on the SurfMuff. However I appreciate that plugs are not for everyone and would recommend anyone gives them a try if they do not get on with plugs and are not ready for a full cap. The bottom line is to protect your ears!
