Macmillan Nurses
Work closely with the doctors and nurses at The Health Centre although I am
employed by Cornwall Macmillan Service, part of Macmillan Cancer Relief.
Macmillan Nurses are specially trained, with wide experience, to give supportive
care to people with cancer and other advanced illness and their help extends to
the whole family. They cover a wide spectrum of care, working with people at
any point in their illness.
Macmillan Nurses work closely with general practitioners, district nurses and
other health care workers, sharing their expertise in symptom control and in
emotional support. Their role is that of a specialist offering advice,
information and support to patients and their carers and to their colleagues.
They have an important part to play in coordinating care and their overall aim
is to ensure that each person receives the best possible care.
The relief of pain and other symptoms, using drugs and other
forms of treatment, is a key element in cancer care. Emotional support is also
vital in helping people to cope with their illness, with the effects of
treatment, or with any fears or worries they may have about the future. Because
Macmillan Nurses are directly involved with a comparatively small number of
patients, they have the time to give emotional support and to talk over such
problems with patients and those close to them.
In Cornwall, each of the community Macmillan Nurses works in a
defined geographical area. He/She can offer help with:
- physical problems
- emotional
- social circumstances
- practical issues
ANYONE can refer to a Macmillan
Nurse by telephoning the Macmillan Centre in Truro during normal office hours.
The community Macmillan Nurses aim to contact anyone referred to them within two
working days, when appropriate.
