Docs Proplugs review

Plus used
Docs Proplugs, perforated silicone flanged earplugs with leash (a length of polyurethane string looks like fishing line between the 2 earplugs). The in ear part is short but effective.

Surf conditions
Head high Porthtowan, clean, low tide, light wind.

Comfort
After a while I hardly noticed them. They kept the cold water and wind out of my ears which avoided the earache that often comes with exposure to stronger winds. A few drops of water do get through the perforation but tend to be warmed and not a problem.

Hearing
Proplugs with holes are said to reduce hearing by up to 2db, which (if my memory of physics serves me well) means the volume is halved. However it feels much less of a reduction, and after a few minutes I wasn't aware of any difference. Conversation was still easy and I could still hear the waves coming.

Balance
Arguably not my strongest point at the best of times, but I experienced none of the disorientation present with silicone or Blutac plugs. Basically not a problem.

Retention
These plugs have yet to fall out! I still feel happier with the leash but have been impressed that they have survived a few good rinses.

Conclusion
Get some!! 9/10. Comfortable, and essential protection from surfer's ear, especially in the cold air and water of a British winter.
